York fielded a White Roses club as early as 1884, when it stepped in to replace a disbanded Harrisburg team in July, and the name was still on the uniforms when the city's last professional season ended in 1967.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBetween those two points the club turned up almost everywhere. It played in the Pennsylvania State League in 1893, the Tri-State League from 1905 through 1914, the New York-Pennsylvania League through the 1920s and early 1930s, the Interstate League from 1943 to 1952, and the Piedmont League in the mid-1950s. The 1906 club finished first at 75-52. The 1925 club went 77-55 and won the pennant outright.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTwice the franchise left town mid-season. In July 1914 it moved to Lancaster, and in July 1936 it moved to Trenton, both times partway through a schedule. York always got another team.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe dugout drew men who had done things elsewhere or would later. Jack Bentley, who pitched for the New York Giants in the 1923 and 1924 World Series, managed York from 1929 to 1931. Frank Oceak ran the club from 1948 to 1950 before a long run as a Pittsburgh Pirates coach that included the 1960 and 1971 championships. George Case, who led the American League in stolen bases six times, managed in the 1960s, as did Billy Klaus.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYork spent most of a century as one half of a rivalry with Lancaster, the two cities splitting the white rose and the red between them the way the English houses had.
