Gardner had managed the Mayfield Clothiers to a Kentucky title in 1950.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOutfielder Ellis Burton scored 140 runs in 1955 and Olaf Nelson won 24 games, both league bests. In 1957, under former big-league pitcher Bob Hooper, the Stars went 89-48 and won the Arizona-Mexico League pennant as a Baltimore Orioles affiliate. The engine was an 18-year-old Baltimore native named Barry Shetrone, who hit .371 and led the league with 199 hits and 151 runs. His scout said he had Mickey Mantle's speed, and two years later he was in the majors.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe San Francisco Giants moved their Triple-A club to Phoenix in 1958, and the old desert circuit folded the following spring.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eArizona's first league in organized baseball opened in 1928 as a Class D circuit with four clubs, in Bisbee, Miami, Phoenix and Tucson.
