Vintage California T-Shirts: Defunct California Baseball Teams

Professional baseball in California is older than the World Series. By the 1890s the state had its own professional circuit, with teams like the Santa Cruz Sand Crabs, the Watsonville Hayseeds, and the Sacramento Gilt Edges playing in towns up and down the coast and through the Central Valley. The nicknames of that era read like a map of what California grew and made: the Fresno Raisin Growers, the San Jose Prune Pickers, the Salinas Packers, the Merced Fig Growers.

The tradition never really stopped. Sacramento and San Francisco fielded clubs in the West Coast's top minor league for decades, and from the 1940s through the 1990s a new generation of California teams came and went: the San Jose Bees, the Bakersfield Blaze, the Lodi Crushers, the San Bernardino Spirit, the High Desert Mavericks. Some of these teams are recent enough that fans who sat in the stands are still telling the stories.
