Vintage Tennessee Shirts: Defunct Tennessee Baseball Teams

Tennessee's professional baseball ran the length of the state. West Tennessee was KITTY League country, where the Union City Greyhounds, the Jackson Generals, the Dyersburg Forked Deers, the Paris Travelers, and the Clarksville Cats played through the first half of the century. In the east, the Tennessee Valley towns fielded the Kingsport Cherokees, the Newport Canners, the Maryville-Alcoa Twins, and the Oak Ridge Bombers.

Memphis carried the longest professional run in the state. For three seasons beginning in 1909 the club there was known as the Turtles, a nickname that sits in the record books between two better eras and has never been explained.
