Vintage Florida Shirts: Defunct Florida Baseball Teams

Florida's original professional baseball circuit was founded in 1919, and its early rosters read like a tour of old Florida: the Bartow Polkers of Polk County, the Sanford Celeryfeds from the state's celery capital, the Bradenton Growers, the Ocala Yearlings from horse country, and the Palatka Azaleas. Over the decades that followed, professional baseball reached nearly every corner of the state, from the Jacksonville Beach Sea Birds on the Atlantic to the Key West Conchs at the end of the Overseas Highway, who played in an international league with clubs in Havana, Cuba.

These little ballparks saw real history. A 19-year-old Stan Musial stopped pitching and became a hitter in Daytona Beach, Hall of Famer Joe Tinker built Orlando its ballpark and won a championship there in 1923, and Babe Ruth ran clinics at Palatka's Azalea Bowl.

Most of those clubs are gone now, but their stories survive in box scores, newspaper archives, and the memories passed down in these towns.
