Vintage Oklahoma Shirts: Defunct Oklahoma Baseball Teams
Oklahoma's baseball history is oil-boom history. The Sooner State League of 1947 to 1957 filled the state's small towns with clubs like the Ada Herefords, the Seminole Oilers, and the Duncan Uttmen, a team its owner named after himself. The McAlester Rockets won five league championships as a Yankees farm club, and it was in McAlester that a young Dorrel Herzog picked up the nickname Whitey. Ardmore's Boomers and Muskogee's Oilers carried the oil-patch spirit in earlier decades, and Bartlesville and Ponca City fielded clubs in the Western League era.
