The Canton Terriers, based in Canton, Ohio, played in the Class B Central League from 1928 to 1930, with a brief return in 1932. The club won the Central League championship in 1929. It was the only pennant either incarnation of the Terriers would claim in the Central League.

That title-winning roster included Mose Solomon, who finished out his playing career in Canton at age 28. Six years earlier, Solomon had been one of baseball's biggest stories: after setting an all-time minor league home run record with 49 homers for Hutchinson in 1923, the press dubbed him the "Rabbi of Swat," and the New York Giants bought his contract for a reported $100,000, hoping he'd become a Jewish answer to Babe Ruth. He played just three games for the Giants before being sent back down, and by the time he reached Canton in 1929, his power numbers were long gone; he retired from baseball after that season.

A second Canton Terriers club played the Middle Atlantic League from 1936 to 1942 as a Boston Red Sox affiliate, winning two more championships before the league suspended operations during World War II. The Terriers name was not revived again afterward.

The Central League itself was a Class B circuit that ran, often sporadically, from 1903 into the 1930s (with a later 1948-51 revival), fielding teams mostly from Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.
