The Dayton Ducks, based in Dayton, Ohio, were named after their own owner and field manager, Howard "Ducky" Holmes, a former catcher who'd played one week in the majors for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1906 before later becoming a Major League umpire. The Ducks took over Dayton's spot in the Class B Central League in 1932, after the league sat out 1931 and the city's previous club, the Aviators, had folded.
In their only Central League season, the Ducks went 77-64, finishing third in the regular-season standings, but caught fire in the postseason, sweeping the Fort Wayne Chiefs four games to none to win the championship.
Dayton's Central League run ended there, but the Ducks name lived on: the club moved into the Middle Atlantic League the next year and played through 1942 (briefly as the Dayton Wings in 1939-40), serving for most of that stretch as a Brooklyn Dodgers affiliate.
The Central League itself was a Class B circuit that ran, often sporadically, from 1903 into the 1930s (with a later 1948-51 revival), fielding teams mostly from Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.
