The Zanesville Potters, based in Zanesville, Ohio, take their name from the city's long history as a pottery-manufacturing center. The club picked up the name in 1910, continuing the Central League franchise that had played the two previous seasons as the Zanesville Infants.

Zanesville finished sixth in 1910 at 61-76 under manager Roy Montgomery, then improved to third in 1911, going 74-58 under new manager Joe Raidey, behind only the pennant-winning Dayton Veterans.

The 1912 season brought a steep decline. Zanesville cycled through three managers and finished 52-78, and that June, a tornado tore through the city. The following March, an even worse disaster hit: a flood on the Muskingum and Licking Rivers that crested 29 feet above normal. The club, by then playing in the Interstate League, briefly renamed itself the Zanesville Flood Sufferers in the disaster's aftermath before disbanding in June 1913.

Pitcher Sam Jones got his start with that final Zanesville club before making his major league debut with the Cleveland Naps in 1914. Nicknamed "Sad Sam" for his somber demeanor, Jones went on to win 229 games over a 22-year career, mostly with the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees, and pitched in four World Series.

The Central League itself was a Class B circuit that ran, often sporadically, from 1903 into the 1930s (with a later 1948-51 revival), fielding teams mostly from Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.
