Lewiston Cupids Cartoon

Lewiston Cupids

The Lewiston Cupids were a minor league baseball team that played in the New England League 1914 and 1915 seasons. Lewiston had previously hosted an un-nicknamed team in the Maine State League in 1907 and 1908. The Cupids have a claim to fame other than their unique nickname; they had pitched through back-to-back no hitters. In a double header against the Lowell Grays, the Oscar Tuero and then Otto Rettig threw no-hitters for the Cupids. Oscar did it in nine innings and Otto in five, because the second game was presumably called early. Like many early minor league teams, the Cupids existed for only a single season before folding. Despite their short tenure, they are part of the early fabric of Maine's baseball history.
