The Mattoon-Charleston Canaries played only the 1906 season in the Kitty League, owned by the Mattoon City Railway Company, which also built their ballpark at a local amusement park. Despite their short life, the team produced major leaguer Larry Doyle, who went on to star for the New York Giants, winning the 1912 Chalmers Trophy, the 1915 batting title, and four NL pennants during his 14-year career. After the Kitty League folded in 1906, Charleston fielded teams in the Eastern Illinois League under different names in 1907 and 1908 (first the Charleston Broom Corn Cutters and then the Charleston Evangelists, yes, really). When those teams disbanded, minor league baseball left the Charleston-Mattoon area and has not returned.
