The Tucson Cowboys were Tucson, Arizona's professional baseball club for the better part of three decades, playing from 1928 to 1930, 1937 to 1941 and 1947 to 1958. No other team in the state lasted as long under one name.
Tucson was a charter member of Arizona's first league in organized baseball in 1928, and period papers also tried out the name Waddies, a cowhand's word for a cowpuncher, before Cowboys stuck. For most of those years Tucson played at Randolph Municipal Park, built on a former city golf course and renamed Hi Corbett Field for the longtime club president. It was the only grass field in the early league; everyone else played on raked gravel and sand.
The Cowboys won two pennants outright. The 1941 club went 86-46 and took both halves of the season, so no playoff was needed. The 1953 club went 90-49 under player-manager Don Jameson, carried by shortstop Joe Joshua, bought from Phoenix for $250, who hit .359 with 29 home runs and 129 runs batted in, and by pitcher Corky Reddell, who won 29 games. Tucson also finished first in 1940 before losing the final.
The Cowboys were a Cincinnati Reds farm club in 1940 and 1941 and a Cleveland Indians affiliate from 1947 to 1950, when Cleveland held spring training at the same park. One outfielder, Tony Boroja, once stopped a game to kill a rattlesnake in left field. The Cowboys finished second in 1958, the Arizona-Mexico League's last season, and Tucson's next professional club, the Toros, did not arrive until 1969.
Arizona's first league in organized baseball opened in 1928 as a Class D circuit with four clubs, in Bisbee, Miami, Phoenix and Tucson. It became the Arizona-Texas League in 1931 and the Arizona-Mexico League in 1955, and ran, with gaps, through 1958, eventually reaching into Texas, New Mexico, Nevada and northern Mexico.
