The Shawnee Hawks, based in Shawnee, Oklahoma, were the continuation of the franchise that began in Duncan as the Cementers in 1947, then the Uttmen in 1949, before financial trouble forced a mid-season relocation to Shawnee on August 18, 1950. Under the Hawks name the franchise steadied into one of the more consistent clubs in the league's second half, posting a 96-44 record in 1951 and winning the first-half pennant. The team became a Brooklyn Dodgers affiliate from 1953 through the Sooner State League's final 1957 season. Shawnee was one of only two Oklahoma cities, along with Ardmore, to field a team for every season the league operated.
The Sooner State League was a Class D circuit that operated from 1947 through 1957, fielding teams from across Oklahoma along with several northern Texas cities. In the years before television brought major league baseball into American homes, minor leagues like the Sooner State League were a central part of community life across small-town America. At the peak of the minor league era in the late 1940s, more than 50 leagues and nearly 500 clubs operated across the country, giving fans in hundreds of cities and towns their only connection to professional baseball.
