The Duncan Uttmen, based in Duncan, Oklahoma, carried one of the more unusual names in Sooner State League history. Rather than a local industry, animal, or occupation, the Uttmen took their name from the team's owner, a quirk that baseball historians have noted alongside a small handful of similarly self-referential minor league nicknames from the era. The club began play in 1947 as the Duncan Cementers, named for the city's cement production industry, before rebranding as the Uttmen in 1949. Our design reflects that cement industry heritage, featuring a cement worker in work clothes leaning on a baseball bat. Duncan's earlier baseball history included the 1922-1924 Duncan Oilers of the Oklahoma State League, named for the city's oil production rather than its cement works.
The franchise's tenure in Duncan was short-lived. Struggling financially, the club relocated mid-season on August 18, 1950 to Shawnee, Oklahoma, where it continued as the Shawnee Hawks through the end of the Sooner State League's run in 1957.
The Sooner State League was a Class D circuit that operated from 1947 through 1957, fielding teams from across Oklahoma along with several northern Texas cities. In the years before television brought major league baseball into American homes, minor leagues like the Sooner State League were a central part of community life across small-town America. At the peak of the minor league era in the late 1940s, more than 50 leagues and nearly 500 clubs operated across the country, giving fans in hundreds of cities and towns their only connection to professional baseball.
