The Greensburg Green Sox played in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, the Westmoreland County seat, in the Class D Pennsylvania State Association in 1937. Greensburg fielded a team in that league for six straight seasons under a rotation of names, opening as the Trojans in 1934, running as the Red Wings in 1935 and 1936, taking the Green Sox name in 1937, and finishing as the Senators in 1939.
The Green Sox season is remembered for a first. On a Tuesday night in June 1937, Greensburg and Monessen played the first night baseball game the city had ever seen, at Offutt Field, under a new lighting system that cost $5,064 and carried 69 sets of dual 1,500-watt lamps. Greensburg played most of its games at night from then on, and by August the local trolley company was advertising that fans no longer needed an excuse to leave work early, since the Green Sox were fighting for the pennant under floodlights.
The lights were a survival measure as much as a novelty. Attendance was falling across the Association, and 1937 was the year two member clubs folded a month into the schedule, forcing the league to restart its season from scratch in mid-June and finish as a four-team circuit. Greensburg was one of the four still standing.
The May 1937 Green Sox lineup included a young first baseman named Lopat, very likely Eddie Lopat in his first professional season. Lopat began his career as a first baseman in the Cardinals organization before converting to the mound, and as a pitcher he won five straight World Series with the New York Yankees from 1949 through 1953.
The Pennsylvania State Association was a Class D league that operated from 1934 through 1942, drawing entirely on the small industrial cities of western Pennsylvania.
