The Kane Mountaineers played in Kane, Pennsylvania, a McKean County borough that sits above 2,000 feet in the Allegheny high country, in the Class D Interstate League from 1905 through 1907. They were a charter member when the league opened play on April 25, 1905.
The circuit Kane helped start was drawn from the oil and lumber country straddling the Pennsylvania and New York line. The Mountaineers opened in 1905 alongside Bradford, Coudersport, Erie, Jamestown, and Olean, and by 1907 the league had grown to eight clubs with DuBois, Punxsutawney, Franklin, and Oil City aboard. Kane sat at an even .500 in mid-June of that final season before sliding down the standings as the summer wore on, while DuBois and Oil City traded first place.
The 1907 roster carried a first baseman named Daubert, very likely Jake Daubert in his first professional season. Daubert, a coal-region kid from Shamokin, reached Brooklyn in 1910, won back-to-back National League batting titles in 1913 and 1914, and took the 1913 Chalmers Award as the league's most valuable player.
The period coverage gives a fair picture of what an afternoon at a Kane game looked like. When the Mountaineers visited Punxsutawney in June 1907, the local paper judged that the game, a 3-1 loss in an hour and forty minutes, "moved along as though on ball bearings," and credited Kane's fielders with some of the quickest plays seen on the grounds all season. Kane lost to the same club again at the end of the month when Punxsutawney bought a pitcher off the DuBois staff expressly for the occasion and he threw a two-hit shutout.
The Mountaineers name fit the geography rather than an industry, which sets Kane apart from most of its neighbors on that circuit.
