The Louisville Eclipse of Louisville, Kentucky, started as a West End semi-pro club by the mid-1870s and became a charter member of a new major league in 1882. That first season Pete Browning won the league's first batting title at .378, and Tony Mullane and Guy Hecker threw no-hitters eight days apart, the first time one team had two in a season.
In 1884 Hecker won 52 games, one of only three 50-win seasons in major league history, and Moses Fleetwood Walker made his major league debut at Eclipse Park. By 1885 the club was known as the Louisville Colonels.
