The Seattle Clamdiggers were Dan Dugdale's 1902 Seattle, Washington, entry in the Pacific Northwest League, and they went 70-50 to finish second, three games behind Butte. That season the league added Butte and Helena and was rated Class B in the first year of formal minor league classification. Pitcher Bill Hogg, later a four-season starter for the New York Highlanders, was on the 1902 staff. No period explanation of the Clamdiggers name has been found.
Dugdale, a catcher for Kansas City of the National League in 1886 and Washington in 1894, came west in 1898 meaning to join the Klondike gold rush and stayed in Seattle instead. He owned or ran Seattle teams for most of the next two decades, and the city's main ballpark, Dugdale Park, carried his name until it burned in 1932.
The Clamdiggers name came at the end of a short run of Seattle clubs under Dugdale. His 1898 team finished first in a four-team league, but period papers called it the Klondikers or gave it no nickname at all. The league went dark for 1899 and 1900, and when it returned in 1901 Seattle papers mostly called his third-place club "Dugdale's team."
In 1903 the circuit took a new name to fight the league that became the West Coast's top minor league, which had placed its own clubs in Seattle and Portland. Dugdale's team, now called the Chinooks, finished third at 78-71. The Seattle Daily Times reported that Dugdale punched Hogg that season when the pitcher demanded his release to jump to the rival league. The rival league won the war, and Dugdale sold his team and territorial rights to it.
