Vintage Alabama Shirts: Defunct Alabama Baseball Teams

Alabama baseball ran from the smelter towns to the Gulf. Mobile carried professional ball longer than anywhere else in the state, from the Swamp Angels of 1887 through four decades of Bears, and the city fielded a club under half a dozen names in between. Birmingham's Babies lasted a single season in 1887, years before the city that iron built found any stability on a ball field.

Inland, the Montgomery Billikens took their name from a good luck charm that was sweeping the country in 1911, and the Selma Cloverleafs won four league titles across three decades, the last three of them in four years. The Dothan Browns held down the state's southeast corner, and the Mobile Baysharks brought independent ball back to the coast in the 1990s.
