The Artesia Numexers, based in Artesia, New Mexico, played in the Class C Longhorn League in 1954 and 1955, under a name that combined "New" and "Mexico." The 1954 team was the best club Artesia ever fielded, finishing first at 92-46 and then beating the Midland Indians and the rival Carlsbad Potashers in the playoffs to win the league championship.
That 1954 pitching staff included Jim Tugerson, a Negro Leagues veteran who had sued the Cotton States League a year earlier after it refused to let him pitch. The 1955 Numexers went 80-57. Their home, Brainard Park, is still the home field for Artesia High School.
