The Butte Smoke Eaters, based in Butte, Montana, played the 1900 season in the Montana State League and finished 30-40, fourth in a four-team circuit, at the Mt. Columbia Grounds.

The nickname was a mining reference. The Anaconda Standard reported that spring that smoke eaters had already been attached to earlier Butte ball clubs and football teams, and the alternatives under discussion were miners, dismissed as too tame, along with coppers and millionaires. What the papers wanted was a name that captured Butte as the greatest mining city in the world, and the smoke pouring off its smelters supplied it.

Butte had been a charter member of the 1892 Montana State League and took that championship by default, splitting a five-game series with Helena and then withholding Helena's $176 share of the gate until Helena refused to play the decider. Under the Miners name from 1902 the franchise passed through six leagues in sixteen seasons, winning titles in 1902 and 1903. Hall of Fame pitcher Joe McGinnity was player-manager in 1916 and 1917, still pitching in his mid-forties after 246 major league wins.
