The Federalsburg Feds, based in Federalsburg, Maryland, played in the Eastern Shore League from 1937 to 1941 and 1946 to 1949 as a Philadelphia Athletics affiliate, going by the A's, Athletics, or Little A's interchangeably for most of that run. For their final 1949 season, with the Athletics affiliation gone, the club rebranded as the Feds, a nod to the town's own name.
The high point came in 1939, when Federalsburg ran away with the Eastern Shore League pennant, finishing 83-38 under manager Sammy Holbrook, 14 games ahead of the field. Pitcher Les Hinckle led the league that season in all three major pitching categories: 27 wins, 309 strikeouts, and a 2.49 ERA. In 1946, the club was managed by Lew Krausse Sr., whose son Lew Krausse Jr. later pitched 12 years in the majors, throwing a complete-game shutout in his major league debut in 1961. Slugger Ducky Detweiler led the league in both home runs (29) and RBI (133) in 1947 while playing for Federalsburg.
The Eastern Shore League was a Class D league that ran on the Delmarva Peninsula across three separate stretches: 1922 to 1928, 1937 to 1941, and 1946 to 1949, with teams drawn from Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia. In the 1800s and first half of the 1900s, teams existed in thousands of small towns across the United States, as Americans looked for recreational activities and entertainment in the era before TV.
