Vintage Idaho Shirts: Defunct Idaho Baseball Teams

Idaho had professional baseball in six cities and rarely for long. Leagues formed around irrigation towns and mining camps, folded, and reformed, and the clubs that came out of them carried names no marketing department would approve today: Fruit Pickers in Boise, Russets in Idaho Falls, Cowboys in the Magic Valley. Boise's team was named in a 1939 public contest by a man who argued the club would pilot the city back to baseball.

Small as the state's baseball history is, the talent that passed through it was not. Billy Martin played in Idaho Falls at 18, Dick Allen spent 1961 in Twin Falls, and Lewiston sent both Tony La Russa and Reggie Jackson through town inside three seasons while sharing a field with the local high school.
