The Paducah, Kentucky minor league team was known primarily as the Chiefs, though it also played under the names Indians, Polecats, and Red Birds during its history. The “Chiefs” name, used in 1903, 1911–12, and 1949–55, honored Chief Paduke, a Chickasaw leader for whom the city was named. With the exception of two seasons in the Mississippi-Ohio Valley League, Paducah spent its time in the Class D KITTY League. The team won the league pennant in 1913 and again in 1955, the league’s final season, finishing with the best winning percentage despite fewer wins than Mayfield.
Several notable players came through Paducah, including pitcher Ben Tincup, a Cherokee who logged a 30-year pro career and pitched for Paducah well into his late 40s. Future Kansas City Royals manager Jim Frey began his playing career there in 1950, hitting .325 before moving into coaching and later managing the 1980 AL champions. Another colorful figure was catcher Grover Land, who played in Paducah in 1904 before a major league career with Cleveland and the Federal League’s Brooklyn Tip-Tops, remembered both for his toughness on the field and a series of off-field altercations and arrests.
