Western League

The Western League was one of the longest-running names in minor league baseball, a Class A circuit that operated across the Great Plains and Rocky Mountain West through the first half of the twentieth century. Its teams stretched from Denver and Pueblo in the Rockies to Wichita, Omaha, Sioux City, and Des Moines on the plains, with later stops as far south as Amarillo. The league name itself carries real weight in baseball history: an earlier Western League of the 1890s was the circuit Ban Johnson transformed into the American League, and the twentieth-century league inherited both the name and the territory.

Its rosters produced some of the most distinctive nicknames of the era. The Wichita Witches, the Des Moines Undertakers, the Hutchinson Wheatshockers, and the Colorado Springs Millionaires all played under the Western League banner, alongside franchises like the St. Joseph Saints and Joplin Miners that moved between the Western League and neighboring circuits for decades.
