The Amarillo Gold Sox took their name from their Texas Panhandle city; Amarillo is Spanish for yellow, and the club leaned into the golden connection. Amarillo had fielded Gold Sox teams in the West Texas-New Mexico League from 1939 to 1942 and again from 1946 to 1955, and when that league folded, the club kept professional baseball alive in the Panhandle by moving up to the Class A Western League in 1956.
The move paid off immediately. Playing as an unaffiliated club, the Gold Sox won the 1956 Western League regular season title. They spent 1957 and 1958 as an affiliate of the Pacific Coast League's Sacramento Solons, and in the league's final season of 1958 they led the entire circuit in attendance. When the Western League folded after that year, Amarillo was the only club to move up rather than down, joining the Double-A Texas League for 1959.
A later Amarillo Gold Sox club played in the Texas League from 1976 to 1982 as a San Diego Padres affiliate, reviving the name for a new generation of Panhandle fans.
The Western League was a Class A circuit for most of its life, operating from 1900 through 1937 and again from 1947 through 1958, fielding teams across the Great Plains and Rocky Mountain states, including Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Colorado, Missouri, Oklahoma, and later Texas and New Mexico. For its first decade it stood just one step below the major leagues. An earlier league of the same name, which ran from 1885 to 1899, renamed itself the American League in 1900 and lives on today as one half of Major League Baseball.
