The Ashland Colonels played in the Mountain State League from 1939 to 1942 and were the league’s only Kentucky-based team, with Ashland located near the KY-WV border. They competed against teams like the Beckley Bengals and Huntington Bees. When the Colonels folded, professional baseball would not return to Ashland until a Frontier League franchise arrived in 1993. The Colonels were part of a wave of small-town teams during an era when baseball served as a key recreational outlet across America.
