Bluefield’s baseball history dates back to 1937 when the Bluefield Blue-Grays joined the Mountain State League, playing through 1955 with a hiatus during World War II. The team played at Bowen Field, which opened in 1939 on the Virginia side of the border but is maintained by Bluefield, West Virginia; the stadium was rebuilt in 1973 after a fire and later received orange seats from Anaheim Stadium in the 1990s. The Blue-Grays were affiliated at various times with the Boston Braves, Washington Senators, and Boston Red Sox, and after the Mountain State League folded, they joined the Appalachian League, winning titles in 1949, 1950, and 1954. While few Blue-Grays players reached the majors, Victor Sorrell and Ken McBride did, and Ralph Beard, a standout basketball player at Kentucky, also played for Adolph Rupp's Kentucky teams. After 1955 the Blue-Grays name disappeared, but Bluefield has had an Appalachian League team in all but one season since then. Today, Bowen Field hosts the Bluefield Ridge Runners, part of the collegiate summer Appalachian League.
