The Carlsbad Potashers took their name from the potash mines around Carlsbad, New Mexico. Backed by local businessman Charlie Montgomery, the club joined the Class C Longhorn League in 1953 and won the league championship in its first season, finishing first at 80-52 and drawing a league-high 83,462 fans.

Carlsbad later played in the Southwestern League and, from 1958 to 1961, the Sophomore League as a Chicago Cubs affiliate. On August 11, 1959, outfielder Gil Carter hit a ball over a 60-foot light tower at Montgomery Field that was estimated at 650 to 730 feet, still cited as possibly the longest home run in professional baseball history.
