The Newport Colts of Newport, Rhode Island, went 70-37 in their first season, 1897, under manager Mickey Finn, and reference accounts credit them with the New England League championship after a dead heat with Brockton. Pitcher Marvin Hawley led the league with 24 wins.

The Colts played at Basin Field, built in 1893 near the harbor and still hosting baseball every summer as Cardines Field, one of the oldest ballparks in continuous use in the country. Outfielder Jack Gilbert led the league in stolen bases in 1898 and 1899, and the 1899 Colts claimed a disputed second-half pennant. The league did not return in 1900, and neither did the Colts.
