The Providence Chiefs of Providence, Rhode Island, were fire chiefs. The cover of the club's 1946 program shows a fireman under a leather helmet, and this design takes its cue from it. The Chiefs played the 1946 and 1947 seasons in the Class B New England League at Cranston Stadium, which is why the papers sometimes called them the Cranston Chiefs.
The club opened as an independent, winning its first game 6-2 on May 8, 1946, and finished 64-60. For 1947 it signed on as a Cincinnati Reds farm club and went 57-66. After that season the fire chief was retired, and the club folded in June 1949, the last year of the league.
