The Providence Clamdiggers were the minor league club of Providence, Rhode Island, on and off from 1891 through 1905, carrying a nickname the city invented for itself and one that belonged to Narragansett Bay.

Under manager Billy Murray the club won the pennant in 1894, finishing 78-34 and 16.5 games clear with Joe Knight taking the batting title at .371, and won again in 1900 at 84-52. A third pennant came in 1905 under player-manager Jack Dunn, who led the league with 157 hits while Jack Cronin won 29 games. Dunn later owned the Baltimore Orioles and signed a teenage Babe Ruth, who finished his first professional season in 1914 pitching for Providence.
