The Williamson Red Birds played in the Mountain State League from 1937 to 1942, originally starting as the Williamson Colts before changing their name in 1939. They were one of the league’s most successful teams, posting winning records in five of six seasons and never finishing lower than third place. The Mountain State League, a Class D league for three years and Class C for its final three, was remarkably stable until it shut down due to World War II. Williamson produced several major leaguers, most notably Hall of Famer Stan Musial, who arrived as a 17-year-old pitcher in 1938 and blossomed into one of baseball’s greatest hitters. Other alumni included Del Rice, Hal Rice, and Ken Holcombe, all of whom saw their careers impacted by military service during the war. Decades later, in 1963, Musial was honoured by the Cincinnati Reds with a “Williamson, WV” day at Crosley Field, attended by over 100 residents from the small Appalachian town.
