The Evansville River Rats were one of the earliest minor league teams in Evansville, Indiana. The River Rats started in the Three-I League (the Illinois-Indiana-Iowa League) in 1901 and moved to the Central League in 1903, where they played through 1915 with a two-year gap in 1911 and 1912. The River Rats won the Central League in 1908 and 1915. They played their final seasons at Bosse Field, which opened in 1915 and is the third-oldest ballpark still in use, now home to the Evansville Otters.
The Three-I League (the Illinois-Indiana-Iowa League) was a Class B circuit that ran from 1901 through 1961, with pauses for World War I, the Great Depression, and World War II. Though rooted primarily in Illinois, Indiana, and Iowa, the league also drew clubs from Missouri, Wisconsin, Kansas, Nebraska, and Minnesota as its core membership contracted in later years.
