The Augusta Tourists, based in Augusta, Georgia, played from 1903 through 1917 in the Class C circuit that ran across Georgia, South Carolina, and Florida, and are best remembered for the eighteen-year-old outfielder they sold to Detroit in August 1905.
Ty Cobb played for Augusta in 1904 and again in 1905. He was seventeen the first year, cut early in the season, and back the next. The Detroit Tigers bought his contract that August, and he went on to a .366 lifetime batting average, twelve batting titles, and a place in the first Hall of Fame class ever elected.
The Tourists were competitive without ever quite closing. The 1906 club went 70-45 and finished second, three games behind Savannah. The 1907 team went 59-61. Augusta disbanded during the 1911 season, sat out two years, and rejoined in 1914, finishing last at 52-73. Home games were played at Warren Park.
Augusta had been in professional baseball well before the Tourists, fielding the Browns in 1885 and 1886 and the Electricians in 1893 in the old Southern League. After the Tourists came the Dollies in 1919 and the Tygers through the 1920s. In the 1800s and first half of the 1900s, teams existed in thousands of small towns across the United States, as Americans looked for recreational activities and entertainment in the era before TV.
