The Charleston Sea Gulls, based in Charleston, South Carolina, won the Southern League title in 1893, finishing 51-32 for the best winning percentage in a twelve-team circuit whose season was cut short on August 12. They came back the following year at 33-23 and finished third.
Charleston had been in professional baseball almost from the start. The 1886 club was the city's first, and the franchise won a title in 1892 as well, giving it two championships in consecutive seasons under slightly different league banners.
The longer run came later. Charleston was a charter member of the Class C circuit that formed in 1904 across Georgia, South Carolina, and Florida, and stayed in it until 1923. The 1907 team won the pennant at 75-46 behind Tom Raftery, who led the league in both batting average and hits. Charleston posted the best regular season record again in 1914 at 78-46 and once more in 1917, losing in the playoffs both times, then took a fourth title in 1922.
The name drifted over the years, appearing as Seagulls, Sea Gulls, and eventually just Gulls, before the club became the Palmettos in 1920 and the Pals from 1921 through 1923. Charleston's early teams played at Ball Park Field and later at Hampton Park, and they are the direct ancestors of the professional baseball the city still has today.
