The Dubuque Packers played in Dubuque, Iowa, from 1954 through 1967 in the Mississippi-Ohio Valley League and the Class A circuit it became in 1956, as an affiliate of the Chicago White Sox, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Cleveland Indians. The Packers won league championships in 1955 and 1962.
In 1956 first baseman Deacon Jones, sent to Dubuque with a bad shoulder, hit .409 for the Packers. He never dipped below .400 after the sixteenth game and set a league record that still stands. Jones later played parts of three seasons for the White Sox.
The 1961 Packers featured two future major league stars at the start of their careers: Tommy John, who won 288 games over 26 seasons and gave his name to the elbow surgery, and Tommie Agee, the 1966 American League Rookie of the Year and a 1969 World Series champion with the New York Mets. Both played at John Petrakis Field, which still stands.
