The Fargo Divorcees, based in Fargo, North Dakota, played the 1897 season in the Red River Valley League, the first circuit in the Dakotas to operate under the umbrella of organized baseball. The nickname is exactly what it sounds like: North Dakota required only ninety days of residency to file for divorce, against six months or more everywhere else, and Fargo built an industry on the trade.
Salaries in the four-team league were capped at forty dollars a month. The Grand Forks Herald was printing the Divorcees name by the end of May, and by June the club was signing replacement players on the fly. Fargo finished last at 17-29 when the league disbanded that August, well behind the Moorhead Barmaids across the river.
