The Fargo-Moorhead Graingrowers, based in Fargo, North Dakota, in partnership with neighboring Moorhead, Minnesota, played from 1914 through 1917 and won championships in 1915 and 1917 plus a pennant in 1916. The nickname pointed at the industry that built both cities.
The 1915 club had three twenty-game winners, including 38-year-old Roy Patterson, the winning pitcher in the first American League game ever played. Manager Bob Unglaub, who had run the Boston Red Sox in 1907, was killed in a railroad accident after the 1916 season and was replaced by Denny Sullivan, his old Red Sox teammate and by then a practicing physician. Sullivan had the club in first place at 36-16 when the league folded in July 1917 with the country at war.
