The Grand Forks Flickertails, based in Grand Forks, North Dakota, played four seasons between 1912 and 1915, first in the Central International League and then in the Class C circuit that league became. The nickname came straight off the state seal of civic identity: North Dakota was known as the Flickertail State for the Richardson's ground squirrel that flicks its tail across the prairie.
The club never made it through its final season. Grand Forks withdrew from the league on July 5, 1915, and did not return in 1916, leaving the circuit to reorganize around six teams. The Fargo-Moorhead Graingrowers, who had spent the season chasing Grand Forks and Superior out of the standings, went on to win the championship.
Grand Forks had a longer baseball history than the Flickertails' four years suggest. The Grand Forks Senators played in the semiprofessional Red River Valley League in 1897, and the Grand Forks Forkers played from 1902 through 1906. The Grand Forks Chiefs followed much later, running from 1934 into the 1960s.
