The Helena Senators, based in Helena, Montana, played across six different leagues between 1892 and 1914, more than any other club in the state. They won a league championship in 1909 and had the best record in Montana's first professional league in 1892 without getting to keep the title.
That season Helena went 29-21 and won the four-team second half, then split the first four games of a five-game championship series with Butte. The fifth was never played. Butte withheld the $176 owed to Helena from the gate in Butte, refused a $1,000 bond offered to guarantee Helena would appear for the deciding game, and claimed the championship by default when Helena went home.
Hall of Fame shortstop Joe Tinker played for the 1900 Helena Senators, four years before he became the first name in the Chicago Cubs infield combination that Franklin Pierce Adams made famous in verse. The nickname was borrowed from the old Washington club, a choice the Anaconda Standard called unoriginal while proposing Crackers instead, after Helena's cracker factory.
