The Jacksonville Beach Sea Birds of Jacksonville Beach, Florida were born from local ambition: a group of businessmen formed Greater Beaches Stadium, Inc. and brought professional baseball to the beach towns in 1952. Their Municipal Stadium sat a little over a mile from the ocean, and fans came from Ponte Vedra Beach, Neptune Beach, Atlantic Beach, and Mayport to watch.

The Sea Birds were good right away. Managed by Red Treadway, a former New York Giants outfielder, the 1952 club went 80-56 and finished second in the league behind the Palatka Azaleas. The problem was the turnstiles: the team drew just 23,210 fans all season. A Cleveland Indians affiliation in 1954 couldn't fix the economics, and the Sea Birds folded after three seasons.

The Sea Birds' league began play in 1919 as a Class D circuit of six teams clustered across central Florida, tracing what would later become the I-4 corridor decades before the interstate existed. The circuit ran through 1928, went dark during the Depression, returned in 1936, paused again for World War II, and resumed in 1946. Unlike most minor leagues of the era, it never truly died; the same circuit still operates across Florida today.

In the 1800s and first half of the 1900s, teams existed in thousands of small towns across the United States, as Americans looked for recreational activities and entertainment in the era before TV.
