The Leesburg Anglers of Leesburg, Florida began life under a different and much stranger name: the club entered central Florida's professional league in 1937 as the Leesburg Gondoliers. The Gondoliers won the 1938 pennant before falling to Gainesville in the finals, and that winter the club held a naming contest to find an identity that fit the town better. The winner traded Venice for the water Leesburg actually sits on: the Anglers, a name made for a city surrounded by the big lakes of Lake County, where fishing wasn't a hobby so much as a way of life.

The new name earned its keep fast. The Anglers won the 1941 league championship in the final season before the circuit shut down for World War II. When play resumed in 1946, the club returned under a series of new names, the Packers among them, and later big league affiliations carried Leesburg baseball into the 1960s. Hall of Famer Rollie Fingers passed through as a young pitcher with the 1965 Leesburg club.

The Anglers' league began play in 1919 as a Class D circuit of six teams clustered across central Florida, tracing what would later become the I-4 corridor decades before the interstate existed. The circuit ran through 1928, went dark during the Depression, returned in 1936, paused again for World War II, and resumed in 1946. Unlike most minor leagues of the era, it never truly died; the same circuit still operates across Florida today.
