The Mayfield Clothiers played in the KITTY League during three periods: 1922–1924, 1936–1941, and 1946–1955, with their name reflecting the town’s clothing industry. They won five league titles, including back-to-back championships in 1922 and 1923, two more as a St. Louis Browns affiliate in 1937 and 1941, and another in 1950 as a Pittsburgh Pirates affiliate. Notable alumni included Bob Skinner, a two-time MLB All-Star and World Series champion, and Elmer Wright, who pitched for Mayfield in 1937 before being killed on D-Day with the famed “Bedford Boys.” The Clothiers also became the first KITTY League team to integrate when Mayfield native Mickey Stubblefield debuted as pitcher on June 26, 1952, earning a win in his first game. His brief but historic stint symbolized an important step in league history.
