The Milford Sandpipers, based in Milford, Delaware, played a single season in the Eastern Shore League in 1923 before withdrawing on July 14 rather than forfeit games over an ineligible player. Like Dover, Milford's baseball history predates the Eastern Shore League; the town had fielded a team in the short-lived 1889 Delaware State League, finishing second behind Dover with a 6-5 record before that league folded after less than two months of play.
The franchise returned to the league later under different names: the Milford Giants (1938 to 1941, a New York Giants affiliate) and the Milford Red Sox (1946 to 1948, a Boston Red Sox affiliate), winning the league championship in 1948 by beating Cambridge 4 games to 1 in the finals.
The Giants era produced the city's most notable alumnus. In 1938, 20-year-old Sid Gordon was sent to Milford by Giants scout George Mack and put at third base for the first time in his career. He responded by hitting .352 and leading the league in hits (145) and triples, then went on to a 13-year major league career as a two-time All-Star with the Giants, Braves, and Pirates.
The Eastern Shore League was a Class D league that ran on the Delmarva Peninsula across three separate stretches: 1922 to 1928, 1937 to 1941, and 1946 to 1949, with teams drawn from Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia.
