The Sarasota Gulls of Sarasota, Florida arrived in 1926, at the height of the Florida land boom, when the city was reinventing itself as John Ringling's circus town. The Gulls were the first professional team ever to represent Sarasota, joining the league's Gulf Coast expansion alongside Fort Myers in the spring of 1926.
The club changed its name to the Tarpons for 1927 and folded when the league went dark after 1928. Sarasota would wait until 1961 for another team of its own, though like its Gulf Coast neighbors, the city found its lasting baseball identity as a spring training town.
The Gulls' league began play in 1919 as a Class D circuit of six teams clustered across central Florida, tracing what would later become the I-4 corridor decades before the interstate existed. The circuit ran through 1928, went dark during the Depression, returned in 1936, paused again for World War II, and resumed in 1946. Unlike most minor leagues of the era, it never truly died; the same circuit still operates across Florida today.
