The Shreveport Gassers, based in Shreveport, Louisiana, played from 1915 through 1924 in the regional circuit that spanned Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Arkansas, and won the pennant in 1919. The name came from the natural gas fields that had transformed north Louisiana in the years just before the club was founded, and the ballpark took the same name.
The 1919 title arrived by an unusual route. Shreveport built such a commanding lead through the first half of the season that league officials split the schedule in two, restarting on the Fourth of July to keep the race interesting. Fort Worth won the second half. Shreveport then beat them in the championship series, four games to two with a tie, under manager Billy Smith. It was the franchise's first championship.
The near miss had come three years earlier. The 1916 Gassers went 84-61 and finished a half game back, needing a doubleheader sweep at Fort Worth on the final day and managing only a split. Chick Knaupp led that team at .323 and was still a regular on the 1919 champions. On May 8, 1918, Shreveport and Fort Worth played twenty innings to a 1-1 tie.
The Gassers became a Philadelphia Athletics affiliate in 1923, and the New York Yankees held spring training at Gassers Park in 1921. The name ended in 1925, when a new owner bought both the club and the ballpark, renamed the team the Sports, and renamed the park after himself.
