Union City Greyhounds

The Union City Greyhounds hailed from Union City, TN, and were a long-running franchise in the KITTY League from 1935-1955. The KITTY League was a Class D minor league that consisted of teams from Kentucky, Illinois, and Tennessee during the first half of the 20th century.

The Greyhounds played 19 seasons in the KITTY and won three titles; 1936, 1948, and 1954. The 1936 win was not without controversy. At this time, leagues played two halves of a season and then there would be a playoff or the winners of each half would play each other. The Paducah Indians won the first half and in the second half, Paducah and Union City tied for first. The teams would meet in a series to determine the overall champion and after losing game one, Paducah refused to play. The Paducah manager and seven players were subsequently banned and the Greyhounds were awarded the title.

In 1953, the team would be affiliated with the Brooklyn Dodgers, and they renamed the team the Union City Dodgers. Unfortunately the league would fold in 1955 and Union City has not hosted pro baseball since.
