KITTY League (IL, IN, KY, TN)
The Kentucky–Illinois–Tennessee League, affectionately known as the KITTY League, was a Class D minor league baseball circuit that operated intermittently between 1910 and 1955. The league consisted primarily of teams in Kentucky, Illinois, and Tennessee, but did at times feature a couple teams from Missouri and Indiana. It was one of the more consistent lower level circuits during the early 20th century, as the league maintained commissioners and teams despite having inconsistent seasons.
The league was first established in 1910 with teams from small towns in Kentucky, Illinois, and Tennessee. It folded after the 1914 season, then returned for a brief period from 1922 to 1924. The KITTY League was revived again in 1935 and continued until 1942, when World War II forced its suspension. Play resumed in 1946 and continued through the 1955 season.
Over its history, the league fielded clubs in more than 20 different cities, including Paducah, KY; Fulton, KY; Hopkinsville, KY; Union City, TN; Cairo, IL; and Clarksville, TN. The league often served as an entry point for young players, functioning at the lowest classification level in organized baseball. Declining attendance, financial instability, the rise of television and increasing entertainment options contributed to its final closure in 1955, as with many other leagues of this type. In total, the KITTY League operated across four distinct periods: 1910–1914, 1922–1924, 1935–1942, and 1946–1955.
