Charleston, West Virginia was home to the Senators, a minor league baseball team that existed off and on from 1910 to 1960, playing in leagues such as the Virginia Valley, Mountain States, Mid-Atlantic, and finally the AAA-level American Association. The last iteration of the Senators arrived mid-season in 1952 from Toledo and played at Watt Powell Park until 1960, producing several future MLB players. Notable names include Al Cicotte, great-nephew of Black Sox pitcher Eddie Cicotte; Chuck Harmon, the Cincinnati Reds’ first African-American player; and Jim Kaat, who became a Hall of Famer after a 25-year MLB career. Earlier Senators teams featured Joe Nuxhall, who famously debuted in MLB at age 15 and later became a beloved Reds broadcaster. After 1960, the franchise became the Charleston Indians for three seasons before professional baseball briefly left the city. In 1971, the Columbus Jets relocated to Charleston as the Charlies.
